Winter hiking can be magical — quiet forests, glittering snow, frozen waterfalls. As we head into the colder months, here are a few winter reminders to help keep our hikes safe and enjoyable:
- Trail conditions can shift quickly. Please monitor the weather and surface conditions so you can prepare accordingly.
- Ice cleats are essential. Winter hikes must include cleats or snowshoes as mandatory equipment.
- Cold-weather readiness. Encourage layers, extra warmth, hand/toe warmers, and proper hydration.
- Shorter days. Consider timing and pace so hikes finish comfortably within daylight, and keep a headlamp as part of your essential gear. You can start the hikes later in the morning (e.g. 10 am) to maximize the warmth of the day.
- Shorter hikes. Winter hiking uses more energy than summer hiking, so shorten the distance and difficulty of your hikes.
- Group safety. Even though routes and details are listed on the BTC calendar, please ensure participants understand what to expect regarding terrain, pace, and conditions.
- Know when to turn back. If the trail becomes unsafe or conditions deteriorate, remember, safety always comes first.

We hope you all safely enjoy the Escarpment in all its winter wonderland beauty.
