Overview
The Bruce Trail Conservancy (BTC) is one of Ontario’s largest land trusts and the steward of Canada’s largest footpath. We actively preserve and care for land within the UNESCO-designated Niagara Escarpment Biosphere to protect its ecosystems for the benefit of all.
Summary Description
We are seeking a volunteer to join the Bruce Trail Conservancy Biodiversity Committee as the Project Coordinator for habitat restoration activities, including invasive species removal and native plantings. You’ll be working with Land Stewards and the Land Steward Director to help support biodiversity on Conservancy properties in the Blue Mountains. Activities include helping determine the priority areas for removal/planting and organizing volunteer work parties. Knowledge about invasive species and basic mapping abilities are an asset. Detailed Description
The Blue Mountains Club requires a volunteer to join our Biodiversity Committee to coordinate the invasive species and native planting work parties on BTC-owned properties. Currently, volunteer Land Stewards actively manage and report on the ecological health of these properties. Ad hoc work party events are organized to remove invasive species as well as other rehabilitation projects. We require a volunteer to help prioritize activities, coordinate volunteer work parties and document & track the progress of these projects.
Desirable Skills
• General understanding and appreciation for the natural environment
• Some basic mapping ability to document the location of invasives, removal attempts and native plantings
• Knowledge or willingness to learn more about invasive species’ impact in Ontario and the Bruce Trail corridor (e.g. able to identify invasive species and management options)
• Ability to coordinate work party events and organize volunteers on site
Role Description
• Biodiversity project coordinator (volunteer position) for the Bruce Trail Blue Mountains Club, member of the Biodiversity Committee
• Working with volunteer Land Stewards and the Biodiversity Committee to identify priority areas and projects for habitat restoration (invasive species control & native planting)
• Interact with the Land Steward Director and BTC staff ecologist to confirm projects and best management practices for control/removal/planting
• Initiate and coordinate work parties (with support from the Volunteer Director and the other Biodiversity Committee members)
• Location documentation for projects and monitoring of the status/outcome
Time Requirements
• Review Land Steward Annual Reports (AMR’s) with the Land Steward Director in the Fall to determine work priorities for subsequent Spring
• Participate in the BMC Biodiversity Committee meetings (bi-monthly or as required)
• Lead 1 to 4 onsite work party projects annually (typically in the spring)
